Nelson Mandela School is a diverse and inclusive international bilingual state school, teaching from grade 1 to 13. Students in the final year can graduate with either the bilingual Abitur or the International Baccalaureate (IB).

The Education and Participation Package (BuT)

1. What does BuT mean?

  • The abbreviation BuT stands for education and participation.
  • Those entitled to BuT are entitled to benefits from the education and participation package, the so-called “educational package”, which is part of the basic security provided for children and young people.

2. Content and framework conditions:

  • For children and young people, up to the age of 25
  • If children and families receive unemployment benefit II, social benefit, social assistance, child allowance, housing benefit or benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act - When receiving social assistance or benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act without age restriction
  • Achievement in sports, music, and leisure activities only up to the completion of 18 years of age
  • Apprentices who receive the training allowance are not entitled to benefits of the BuT

3. Which services are subsidized?

  • Personal school needs totalling 154.50 euros per school year
  • Participation in social and cultural life in the community such as in the
    Sports club or music school are supported with the amount of 15 euros per month. - Many cities or municipalities also offer vouchers or special discounts

4. Which costs are covered?

  • One-day school and day-care trips
  •  Multi-day class and day-care trips
  • The transport of pupils to school - even if the student tickets for local public transport provided for this purpose for general authorize journeys outside of school traffic - learning support
  • Participation in a communal lunch at school or Day Care centres.

5. What is the procedure?

  • Apply and receive benefits from the office that already processes their Social benefits, these are in individual cases:
  • Unemployment benefit II or social benefit -> job center
  • Housing benefit and child allowance -> Housing benefit office
  • Social assistance -> Social Welfare Office
  • Benefits according to the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act -> State Office for
    Refugee affairs (LABO)
  • Apply in your own district, as the issue of the berlinpass - BuT can vary depending on the district
