Am 1. Dezember 2021 konnten wir den Berliner Autor Michael Kumpfmüller an unserer Schule willkommen heißen. Nach einer Begrüßung durch Herrn Dr. Bauer las er vor drei Deutschkursen des 13. Abiturjahrgangs einige Passagen aus seinem Roman „Die Herrlichkeit des Lebens“ aus dem Jahr 2011. Der erfolgreiche, inzwischen in 24 Sprachen übersetzte Roman handelt von Franz Kafkas letztem Lebensjahr und seiner Lebensgefährtin Dora Diamant. Herrn Kumpfmüller gelang es durch seinen lebendigen Vortrag mühelos, das Interesse und die Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums zu wecken.

Information during the Corona period

• Masks are required. Testing is being performed at the appropriate level for the different school levels. This is either 5 or 3 times a week.

• The GEV/Parents Council would like to remind all families to please observe all quarantine rules and regulations if they travel abroad.
• The GEV has requested that drivers please avoid Pfalzburger Strasse on both campuses when dropping off and picking up, even if they are late. The pavement outside the school entrance is not for car manoeuvres!! Please treat the safety of all NMS kids with the same high regard as your own and refrain from driving or reversing at kids. 
• Bicycle thefts have been reported near P23 by parents. Specifically near the bakery.  Please be aware that this happens very quickly, sometimes while people are in the bakery for a short time.

Endlich ist es soweit!
Gemeinsam lassen wir das Jahr 2021 bei unserer Konzertpremiere am 22.12.2021 um 18:00 ausklingen. Alle Beteiligten haben hart gearbeitet um dieses vielfältige und bunte Konzert zusammenzustellen. 

Viel Spaß beim anschauen, besinnliche Weihnachtsfeiertage und einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr, wünscht der Musik-Fachbereich der Nelson-Mandela-Schule.

Am ersten Dezember 2021 hat die Klima-Zukunftskonferenz stattgefunden.  Dort konnten Kinder/Schüler teilnehmen und hatten die Möglichkeit, Klimaaktivisten zuzuhören, bei einem Quiz teilzunehmen, bei Workshops mitzumachen und mit den Aktivisten zu reden. Meine Freundin Emma Schubert berichtet über die Konferenz der Aktivisten und meine Freundin Ruby Thomas berichtet über die Information der Arktis (es war ein Quiz dabei). Doch ich (Elisabeth Polivka) berichte über das Gespräch mit einer der Aktivisten. Man konnte ihr zuhören und über einer Website ihre Fragen beantworten. Dort konnte man seine Antworten hinschreiben und die Aktivistin würde sie lesen. Sie überzeugte uns, dass es besser ist, seinen eigenen Strom zu erzeugen mit Solarzellen. Es wurde berichtet, dass immer weniger Menschen in Kohlekraftwerken arbeiten und immer mehr für Solarenergie eingestellt werden. Das alles habe ich herausgefunden.   - Elisabeth Polivka, 5d

Es war eine bewegende Begegnung, die durch das Anne-Frank-Zentrum Berlin und die Ruth-Weiss-Stiftung zustande gekommen war: Die Journalistin und Zeitzeugin Ruth Weiss kam an unsere Schule, um vor Schülerinnen und Schüler aus zwei Lerngruppen des 10. Jahrgangs aus ihrem Leben zu erzählen und Auszüge aus ihrer Autobiographie „Wege im harten Gras“ vorzustellen.

Schon der Begriff „Zeitzeugin“ bedarf der weiteren Erklärung, denn es ist nicht nur eine Zeit, über die Ruth Weiss aus eigenem Erleben berichten kann. Als Kind erfuhr sie die Zeit des beginnenden und sich in kürzester Zeit als lebensbedrohlich offenbarenden Antisemitismus des totalitären NS-Regimes. Die Flucht nach Südafrika im Jahr 1936 brachte sie in ein von der rassistischen Ideologie der Apartheid geprägtes Land. Dass sie sich als Mensch und Journalistin klar dagegen positionierte, führte 1966 zur Aberkennung ihrer südafrikanischen Staatsbürgerschaft – sie verlor ihre Heimat ein zweites Mal und durfte erst 1992 wieder einreisen.

As part of our film project in Ms. Sekhon's English class, we participated in the recent KUKI Short Film Festival from the 14th to the 28th of November as a Jury-Class. We are the 9C and D. In October, the KUKI film team visited and gave us each a bag containing a jury pamphlet with guidelines, a notebook, and several other items. Our task was to watch 14 short films in the 12+ and 14+ categories and it was a tough choice picking a winner, the prize being 1000€. We also chose the second best film as a Special Mention. Using a link that was given to us by the KUKI team we were able to preview these short films in class and at home, discussing the different aspects of the films such as the content/themes, the technical features, camera angles, lighting, sound design and the acting.

To mark World Children's Day on 20 November, 6B spent a few SocS lessons studying The Convention on the Rights of the Child.

We looked at the history of children's rights and discussed how important it is for our whole community to know about them. After all, Article 42 of the UNCRC says that all children, young people and adults should know about the Convention. With this in mind, we made booklets about the convention and prepared presentations in small groups.

Anna-Maya, IB13 student, has designed and painted the walls in the staircase of the new building as her CAS project. Her sketch found approval by the Principal Dr. Bauer and by the Head of the Art Department Florentine Baumann. It follows the idea of the rainbow flag that decorates the walls in one of the staircases. The colors in the flag are an assembly of the colors of each floor of both buildings at P30. Together they make up the rainbow flag that stands for tolerance, gender equality and the LGBTQIA+ community. Anna-Maya came up with dots of different sizes that are independently arranged on the walls and indicate a color flow from black over brown, red etc. to purple on the top floor. The different sizes of the dots symbolise the different physical appearance of the NMS community. The student had a lot of support from fellow classmates to help her paint. They all dedicated six hours on a Sunday to carry out the project. The final touch will be applied next weekend! Thank you, Anna-Maya & friends!

Hybrid Learning Pilot at NMS

This will be the third Covid winter in which we have to deal with cold rooms, quarantine and uncertainty. And with independent learning situations, online collaboration and media literacy. Although it hasn’t always been easy, we learned a great deal from and about learning in online and hybrid situations, from observations and schoolwide surveys like this one. 

The Senate has invited NMS, as one of ca. 20 Berlin schools, to participate in the ‘Hybrid School’ pilot project, which will last for three years. This so-called Schulversuch has provided NMS with the status of pilot school for hybrid learning. This doesn’t include additional teaching hours or funding (that would be too good to be true in the current climate), but it gives us the option to maximise differentiation, combining the positives of remote learning with the restraints of the regular timetable - and to see how creative solutions can lead to a solid hybrid concept. 

Vom 10.11. bis zum 14.11.2021 haben 13 Siebtklässler*innen unserer Schule gemeinsam mit 15 Schüler*innen unserer polnischen Partnerschule aus Swidnica in Schlesien an Theater- und Kunstprojekten zum Thema “Inside-Outside” teilgenommen. Zum Schloss Morawa, das in einem ausladenden Landschaftspark liegt und  als gemeinnütziger Verein deutsch-polnische Jugendaustausche ermöglicht, sind wir unter der Leitung und Organisation von Bernard Szulc zum wiederholten Male gereist.

Zwei Lehrerinnen der polnischen Partnerschule, Florentine Baumann und Olivia Wiedmann, unsere US-amerikanische Kunst-Referendarin waren als künstlerisch-pädagogische Workshopleiterinnen dabei. Bernard Szulc hat die Theater-Workshops übernommen. Während unseres Aufenthaltes in Morawa haben wir uns in ein aktivierendes Bad aus drei Sprachen begeben, Schloss Waldenburg, Swidnica mit der Friedenskirche und die schöne Altstadt besichtigt und viele neue Freunde kennen gelernt. Zum Abschluss gab es eine Theatervorführung, die Ausstellungseröffnung zu den aus Gips entstandenen Plastiken und eine gelungene Abschiedsparty. Unser besonderer Dank geht an Bernard Szulc für die hervorragende Organisation und den jahrelangen intensiven Austausch mit unserem Nachbarland.

For the third time, an NMS upper secondary student won the first place in the international art contest IFAC in Tokyo, Japan. This year’s winner and representative of Germany is Mina Wang, now in Q1 Abitur. Her artwork was selected in the Ministry of Education and sent to Japan where it became part of an international exhibition of high school students from 17 countries. 

Mina would have been invited to fly to Tokyo for the awarding ceremony and the grand opening of the exhibition if the pandemic had not prevented her travel. We congratulate Mina and are proud to have artistic talents at NMS like her!
