Elizabeth Birmingham is an interesting mix of humour, intelligence, grace and common sense.

She has been with the Nelson Mandela School from the very start and it is thanks to her that we have a primary school at all. As one of the pillars of the school, she first started out as a primary teacher and later became the Acting Head of Primary. Later on, after achieving a doctorate during her sabbatical, she decided to transfer to Middle School and Upper Secondary where she not only taught English from grades 7- 13 but also SOCs (social sciences) and then later on geography.

This week we received a lively art piece that is especially good from up high: Nelson Mandela on Schoolyard by 10d. "It always seems impossible until it's done" -

 The current learning situation under Covid- 19 provided us with the possibility to work outside with fresh air and in smaller groups. 10d lived up to the task in Art class and drew a large portrait of Nelson Mandela with chalk onto the concrete of the schoolyard at P30 - come by to have a look before the rain hits!

Berlin landmarks were studied as part of a project in Environmental Studies. Many pupils had to work hard to find motivation and focus to follow through and finish each stage.

Pupils chose and researched a landmark, studying its location, history, special features, original use and place in modern times. Next they needed to write a speech in the style as if they were a tour guide. Much talk went into possibly having to give this speech online to tourists as everyone had to stay at home.

This week we also have book blogs and a cute vlog by 6d

Thank you 6d for some really nice and interesting blogs. There was also a really cool video blog too. It looks great!

 One of the best things to do, when you are at home most of the time, is to dive into an adventure…. by reading a wonderful book. All 6d students have written book reports in the past weeks.

Many students used Weebly to publish their book reportin the form of a blog. One student created a video, which is another creative way to report on a book.

Ms Sajid had the idea of collecting messages from our students, and the NMS staff created a collage of all the lovely photos that we received and would like to show it on the website. This is zoomable.

 It is the NMS students (and a few teachers) sharing the message that we are staying home, in their native language. We think that this collage by and for our students illustrates the strength and creativity of the global NMS community. We hope that everyone takes the message seriously and stays at home, for themselves and for others.

Last summer, one of our students was diagnosed with cancer and had to stay in the hospital for treatment. An opportunity, however, became available for the student to continue to participate in lessons at school; in the form of a little robot called `Ivy`. Ivy could be used as an avatar. There are 43 of these robots in Germany, 8 of them in the Berlin Charité.

After getting in contact with the Charité and having solved all issues regarding data protection, insurance, storage and permission letters of the students and teachers involved, the NMS school management cleared the use of Ivy with the school authorities… who agreed immediately. From that point on, Ivy the Robot took part mainly in English and Math lessons. A big thanks to the teachers involved who right away supported the use of `Ivy` in their lessons.

Last week, a group of NMS students participated in the Berlin Model United Nations (BERMUN) conference at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. Over the course of three days,more than 150 students from Berlin, other parts of Europe as well as Mexico, explored thetopic of “Protecting the Freedom of Expression while confronting Censorship”.

At this year’s Bermun2, hosted by the John F. Kennedy School, students from NMS served as delegates to the United States and Azerbaijan in a variety of panels.

Our school’s Bauhaus Class consisting of 18 Y10 students, continued to work at Bauhaus Temporary interactively. After having developed the actual exhibition DAS BAUHAUS WAR EINE SCHULE, they created short tutorials at work stations, explaining selected exercises of the preliminary course of the Bauhaus of the 1920s.
