The school management, the Friends of Nelson Mandela School and the Parents Council (GEV) are jointly asking all parents and guardians to participate in the Educational Package (Lernmittelfond) at our school. For a flat fee of € 140, students will receive all the books and many other materials they need either to keep or through the libray lending system. Also included in the fee is a € 50 donation towards the costs of IT management and the school libraries.

New parents – please pay into the Educational Package as soon as possible.  Please make sure you enter the name of your child, grade and whether they are English or German Mother Tongue as a reference otherwise we cannot allocate the payment correctly.'

Detailed information on how the Educational Package money was spent in the current school year and on the auditing process is below.

What if I can’t pay?

Families who receive social benefits should contact the library at Pfalzburger Str. 30 (P30) as soon as possible. Additionally, they should present their child's Berlin Pass/and or Letter of Confirmation of receipt of Benefits (Bewilligungsbescheid) at the P30 library. New entrants should provide this written evidence as soon as possible to validate their exempt status. This information will, of course, be treated in the strictest confidence.

Additionally, families who are unable to pay the amount due as one lump sum should also contact the library at P30.

Can’t I just buy all books myself?

Yes, you can. It is, however, very likely more expensive and certainly a lot more hassle. Also, parents who make the decision to purchase books themselves for their child/children are required to provide proof of expenditure up to the maximum €100 capping if they make a request for materials from the libraries. In addition, these parents are also required to pay for the log book.

How did it work in the past?

The Educational Package (Lernmittelfond) expenditure is in the region of €130,000 to €150,000 per school year. The fund is administered jointly by the Friends of Nelson Mandela School and the Parents Council (GEV). There is a yearly audit as well. Here are the financial summaries and audit results of the past years:

What exactly is an Educational Package (Lernmittelfond)?

It basically means that the parents’ funds for books and other materials are pooled to lower the costs for each family. This is partly achieved through discounts when purchasing the books and partly through the library loan system. A good FAQ on the system is provided by
