Grand appearance at the Children's Jury!

On the evening of Friday the 14th November, 2014, four students from 6b, along with four other students from the “Andreas Gymnasium” in Friedrichshain presented this year’s “Kindernothilfe Media Prize”. The annual presentation of this award acknowledges the outstanding work of journalists in the area of child abuse and children’s rights.

Antonia, Ruby, Gil and Frederik from 6b were quite excited as they waited for their appearance in the atrium of the German Telekom Capital City Representative Office. As they finally stood on the stage and looked out at the 500 or so spectators filling the atrium they were hardly able to see any anything beyond the glaring spotlights.

Nevertheless, they skillfully answered the questions asked by host Natalia Wörner and reported on their work as jurors which they began in late August.  Of the 23 submissions from professional journalists, whose contributions were produced for children’s medium (print, T.V., radio), they were allowed to nominate only three.

After a long and difficult decision-making process under the guidance of “härmanz Agency”, (commissioned by the “Kindernothilfe” to support the children’s jury) they came to a clear decision. The winner of this year’s “Kindernothilfe” Media Prize in the category “Children’s Jury” was Thilo Thielke’s article "I was a Child Soldier (Ich war Kindersoldat)” (Dein SPIEGEL) Dieser Beitrag hatte die Kinderjury in besonderem Maße beeindruckt.

For Antonia, Ruby, Gil and Frederik, being a part of the “Children’s jury” was a very special and important experience; though a one off experience it must remain. Next year eight new fifth graders will be selected (perhaps as early as next June) and the Nelson Mandela School hopes to continue their cooperation with the “Kindernothilfe”.
