On May 22, 2014, the German School Rugby Championships were held in Erfurt. Ten fearless players of the Rugby AG (years 7 and 8) went on the journey to face the best school-rugby teams in Germany.

After a four hour drive we arrived at the pitch and barely had a chance to get settled in as we had to warm up for our first match against the local Edith-Stein-Schule, not knowing what to expect. After the match the whole team was almost surprised that we could have won that game, only losing 5:15 due to our lack of experience. The team wanted to do better in the second game against Katholisches Bildungszentrum St. Kilian and the high expectations were well founded as we had the win in our own hands but drew unluckily 17:17. Our third game against the Europäische Schule Rhein/Main turned into a (well spirited) dog fight with both teams not wanting to give the opponent an inch. In the end the NMS had to bow to the more experienced side 5:10. We played our last match against the best team of the tournament, the King´s School Gütersloh, earning their respect with a gritty defensive effort only going down 0:17.

Looking back at the tournament the NMS team can be very proud of their performance bringing three of the best school teams of Germany close to defeat in the first tournament and earning great respect in the rugby playing community for their fair, resilient and technically sound performance.

Thank you to the parents who accompanied us, Nikki Zeuner and Holger Bonnen, to the Friends of the NMS and to the Technische Jugendfreizeit-und Bildungsgesellschaft gGmbH. Without your time, effort, financial and logistical support this trip would not have been possible.
