By Feliz André, Glen Pilger and Dylan White 12 / Abitur Class

On the 10th February 2012 our school celebrated the 22nd anniversary of Nelson Mandela´s release from prison on the 11th February 1990. To honor the namesake of our school all classes of our secondary branch interrupted their normal routine and committed their school day to Nelson Mandela.

Throughout the morning we all gathered for a special assembly, and then listened to a presentation by the German photographer legend Jürgen Schadeberg on his work in Apartheid South Africa and listened to some inspiring stories behind some of his fascinating photographs. While all the other secondary classes participated in diverse workshops, our year group lead by our tutors Mr. Brown and Mrs. Adler participated in group activities with children from our primary school attempting to raise cultural awareness.

We used different fun, educational and creative games and stories to try to teach the first and fifth graders about different cultures, and we enjoyed a meal together supplied by the primary teachers.

At the end of the day we felt that Madiba Day had helped to strengthen our school community while making further progress preventing cultural barriers, which we are sure, would have been along the lines of Nelson Mandela himself.
